Oldest family-run pub Belfast

Lavery's in Belfast, Northern Ireland, is a legendary pub that proudly holds the title of the oldest family-run pub in the city. Since its founding in 1918 by the Lavery family, which has operated it for over a century, it has established itself as a central part of social life in Belfast. The pub is much more than just an establishment; it is a versatile entertainment center that combines the traditional charm of an Irish pub with modern elements. With four different bars, two rooftop terraces, a beer garden, and the largest billiards room in Northern Ireland under one roof, Lavery's offers an impressive variety that makes it a popular meeting spot for locals and tourists alike.

The menu combines classic pub dishes with contemporary options and places great emphasis on accommodating various dietary needs, such as vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free. Particularly popular is the Guinness & Blue Cheese Burger, a juicy burger enhanced with the intense flavor of Guinness and creamy blue cheese—a dish that brings together traditional Irish cuisine with a modern twist. Also noteworthy is the Chicken Share Platter, a generous portion of crispy chicken pieces with sides, perfect for sharing and often considered one of the most ordered dishes. For vegans, there is the Lavery's Buddha Bowl, a colorful bowl packed with fresh vegetables and nutritious ingredients that not only satisfies but also delights the palate. During the Christmas season, the Traditional Turkey and Ham is a festive dish with all the classic sides that puts guests in a holiday mood.

The ambiance at Lavery's is multifaceted, offering something for every taste. The main bar on the ground floor, known as the Public Bar, exudes a lively atmosphere with its rustic decor and large screens regularly broadcasting sporting events. The Back Bar, with its beer garden, attracts a more bohemian clientele and is a hotspot for live music and artistic events. The Woodworkers area, a special space for craft beer lovers, provides a cozy corner with a rotating selection of beers and a 12-foot shuffleboard for added fun. However, the highlight is the Ballroom upstairs, featuring 18 billiard tables and an open rooftop terrace that offers a fantastic view of the city on nice days. The pub is family-friendly, with space for children and high chairs, and is also suitable for larger groups planning private events.

The service is friendly and efficient, with staff striving to provide guests with a warm experience. Orders are often placed at the bar, with an app available to streamline the process—a modern convenience that is particularly well-received by younger guests. The team is known for accommodating individual requests, although it can get a bit hectic during busy times, such as live music nights or sports broadcasts. The kitchen enjoys an excellent reputation for its hygiene standards, which strengthens trust in the quality of the food.

We went to the studio 2 karaoke room to celebrate my birthday and the room was unreal, exactly like its pictures with easy to use and quick karaoke machine, would highly recommend. However I think it may be slightly overpriced as all you get is the use of the room and nothing more. the Facebook page details that table service comes with these rooms but we queried this and were informed it wasn’t an option, just to note the bar is on a different floor to the karaoke room. Our booking was for 6pm and we didn’t get into the room until ~6:40 and had to continuously ask the unuseful bar staff about the room.

Hosted Ormeay Bakery FC for our annual quiz, the staff were very attentive and cooperative helping us set up. They also worked very hard behind the bar throughout the night and the food was excellent. Would highly recommend for any function. Will be back next year!

I can not say enough great things about our dinner and drinks experience on Wednesday evening in the Public Bar. We were so well looked after from start to finish. It was a birthday celebration and we were made to feel so special. Would definitely book again.

Booked 2 pool tables on Saturday February 22nd, hoping to enjoy drinks, pool and great food (we had previously eaten here before on numerous occasions). However, when we went to order food, we were told there was no food being served as "we're manic" as staff walked away from us. A staff member then pointed at a food cart with foil wrapped burgers and chips. On spending £12 on both, we found the burger to be both luke warm and dry, whilst the chips were cold after being sitting in the car for who knows how long. Once again asked staff and were told, "that's all we got"! Gotta say, not the quality from Lavery's we've had before and would highly recommend Lavery's to improve, until then , it's a 2/10 until they get their act together, and a loss of 8 customers.

Absolutely, fantastic. We walked down at 11 AM just to see where it was.As we were booked in for the comedy show said we would go in for one and we did not leave until 12 o'clock that night. Fantastic staff great atmosphere. The food is to die for and one of the best. Comedy shows in Ireland and a massive selection of beers, stouts and laggers you would definitely have enough to choose from. could not recommend this venue enough pool. Hall. Upstairs board games, downstairs. Lots to do will definitely be back. Cannot wait.
